Sparkplug rebuild underway

Cleared site 2Sparkplug is a wonderful project in north Kings Cross that works with local young people especially those most in need.

For years they have worked in a converted toilet and a sea container in a decrepit compound on the edge of Bingfield Park.  There has been a protracted debate about plans to rebuild Sparkplug.  But work has begun recently on the new property.  GRaham Newsome of Architects Network says:

'The new ‘Sparkplug’ building, in Pembroke Street, has commenced construction due to be complete early Summer, subject to this wonderful weather.

The project will include the facilitation of a limited number of people being given the opportunity of ‘work experience’ on site giving them exposure to construction trades through an agreement between Islington Council Sparkplug and the contractor Indecon during the course of the work'

  1. Diana Shelley says:

Well done to everyone who’s worked so hard to get the new Sparkplug funded and on site. Along with Crumbles Castle and Copenhagen Youth Project, Sparkplug makes a really positive contribution to our area. In the recession it’s both doubly important to have a good place for local kids and, of course, doubly hard to get resources for. The new building will be a great step forwards.
