5.45am alarm call

For the last few months, on a regular basis, I have been woken around once a week by an automated fire alarm system in the area. This system sounds a siren followed by a recorded female voice repeating 'this is a fire alarm' over and over again!
I recently discovered this hideous noise was coming from the Kings Place building.
The manager is aware of the huge disruption he is causing to local residents but for reasons unknown has still not stopped this fire drill, or it's external speakers broadcasting across Kings Cross.

This morning I was woken again at 5.45am. This absolutely has to stop. This is intolerable noise pollution and I amazed it has continued for so long. I doubt the well-heeled residents of Kensington have to put up with this sort of nonsense from the Royal Albert Hall!

I will be contacting the manager of Kings Place today but I ask anyone who has been disturbed by this alarm to also complain. Many voices from the community will be far more effective than one.

  1. Neil Blake - Building Operation Director - Kings Place says:

Firstly please accept my apologies for this disturbance that is obviously being caused.

We have to complete a statutory weekly fire alarm test, which is currently carried out in two phases. I have been carrying out some testing to ascertain the levels of residual noise that can be heard externally.

Following today’s testing we have identified that the roof sounders, loading bay and light well sounders need to be isolated from the weekly testing that takes place in the early morning. With these isolated, the sounders will only be heard internally.

Again, please accept my apologies and be assured that I am working hard to rectify the level of noise that is heard externally from the building.

At present the first part of the test is carried out on Thursday at 05:45 and second part is carried out on a Friday at 10:00. The Friday part of the test has to have all sounders activated, which is a legal requirement.

We hope to have the new facility to islate the exteranl sounds in place by the next weekly test on Thursday 11th June 2009.

Get Islington’s noise team on the case! Fire alarms need to be tested occasionally, but it should only be done at a reasonable time of day. I’m fortunately too far to hear it myself, but I can’t see the purpose in broadcasting to the neighbourhood—it’s really not acceptable for hundreds of people to have their sleep disrupted.
