I've just found from the 1891 Census that my Great Great Grandfather, David Munday, a carpenter, lived in Beaconsfiled Buildings with his 2nd wife, their 5 school age/ toddler sons and his wife's grown up nephew. Their address on the Census form seems to be shown as 3 units - 12e, 13e & 14e.

Please. can anyone tell me anything about the layout of the flats in the Buildings?

Does "e" refer to a building or to a floor or to a particular end of the complex? By the standards of the 1890s, 8 people wasn't a very big family, so I wonder how they could be renting 3 units?

Any suggestions or explanations welcome. Thank you.

I LOVE these. I didn't know that's what they were called. I call them 'clickety clacks' and I filmed them wherever I could as I traversed Europe and Asia by train. I don't know what it is about them that's so incredibly romantic. Notably, Gare du Nord still has a Solari. I gawped up at it the other day – it's beautiful and massive. They must be a bitch to update though. Like your idea of an aural prompt, but you know it'd end up being some sort of siren or bell...

There is a distinctly cosmetic feel about all this. TfL's announcement of dangerous junctions they intend to "review" includes places where they have already got redesign projects ready to go. For example, at Highbury Corner, the Council and TfL are entering the final stages of a jointly agreed design that would remove the gyratory. This was partly prompted by TfL's plan to get the Cycle Superhighway across the junction from Highbury Fields to Upper Street. The scheme which has been publicly consulted on is being fine-tuned by Islington Council but is otherwise ready-to-go. The funding is confirmed from TfL's "LIP Major Schemes" pot. So what's to "review"?
